Sound recording equipment to look into

Regarding Sound: Students must be able to create and edit digital images and audio files using their own equipment, or be able to rent or borrow a professional-quality audio recorder like the Edirol R-09, the Marantz 660 or the M-Audio MicroTrack 24/96 for the few hours or day necessary to gather their audio.
We will use the free audio editing program “Audacity” and the inexpensive ($39.95) web slideshow production program “Soundslides.” Both programs are available as downloads on the internet.

Description: This is a VERY unique opportunity to meet and see the work of a very talented and accomplished photographer who does not often come to the Bay Area as she resides in Spain. However, we are pleased to be able to partner with Professor Stanley Brandes in conjunction with the Townsend Center at UC Berkeley to bring you this event. This lecture is a separate event from the colloquia at the Townsend Center.

Ms. García Rodero has spent over 20 years specializing in the documentation of the religious and non-religious folk traditions of Spain, mediterranean Europe and Central America. She has also documented the Burning Man event for the last six years. She sets the crosshairs of her camera on the intersection of the religious and pagan; reportage and fine art; ethnographic and mythic.

“I tried to photograph the mysterious, true and magical soul of popular Spain in all its passion, love, humor, tenderness, rage, pain, in all its truth; and the fullest and most intense moments in the lives of these characters as simple as they are irresistible, with all their inner strength, as a personal challenge that gave me strength and understanding and in which I invested all my heart.”

Please join us for a slide show of her work, a talk and question and answers. The talk will be in Spanish with a translator who will assist those of us not proficient in the language.

Instructor: Cristina García Rodero Born in Spain, and lives in Madrid. A teacher at the School of Fine Arts at the University of Madrid, Ms. Rodero was one of Spain’s leading photographers during the post-Franco era and she offers a historic perspective that is in keeping with the democratic transition of the time (1974-1989).

She is the winner of the Book of the Year Award at the Arles Festival of Photography in 1989. She has also won the prestigious W. Eugene Smith Foundation Prize and the National prize of photography in Spain as well as a prize from the Royal Photographic Society in 1998. She was a member of the agency Vu for more than 15 years.

She has several books including:
España Oculta: public Celebrations in Spain, 1974 - 1989
Festivals and Rituals of Spain, Stemmle, 1992
Rituals in Haiti was published by tf. Editores, Spain in 2001.

On many workshops, critique is one of the most powerful learning tools. Critique gives us a way as photographers to develop a vocabulary that describes what works and what doesn't work about an image. As we grow our understanding of this descriptive visual vocabulary our ability to conceive and pre-recognize great images dramatically improves.

Each day a 3-5 minute video will be available for download. This video will feature a submitted image for critique onscreen with a soundtrack, which will contain the same kind of spoken critique you would receive on a workshop - along with a pointer onscreen that will be used just like a laser pointer would be used in a live critique.

The overall tone and goal of The Daily Critique will be to provide a supportive space in which photographers can share their work, have it reviewed, and hopefully take away valuable, tangible ideas about how to create better photographs. We will describe what we like about the image first and then offer "perfect world" suggestions for improvement.

The Radiant Vista offers users an opportunity to submit their own photos for The Daily Critique. If you are interested in having a photo critiqued, please make a critique submission.

The Daily Critique videos vary in size between 3MB and 5MB. A high speed connection is recommended, but not essential.

I didn't go to a photo school. I was very lost and had to feel [my] way through it. It's pretty hard when you don't have a program like Western [Kentucky] or OU behind you to push you along, and tell you who to talk to, and tell you what to ask. You have to feel your way through it when you start.

...as soon as I get some money to pay for a project that I would love to do.....

In June of 1999, documentary film maker Tao Ruspoli and I went to Havana, Cuba to see what it was like to live in one of the world's last communist countries. We made a film to record our experiences, including interviews with locals, a visit to the Partagas cigar factory, recordings of live music, and many walks around old Havana, all showing the condition of the Cuban people today.

Michael Robinson-Chavez became hooked on photography after a surfing buddy lent him a Canon AE1 for his trip to Peru. "My mom is from Peru, and I went down there for the first time in 1988 and fell in love with photography," he says. "Peru was just a great place to get introduced to it because there were pictures around every corner." He went on to study photography at Brooks Institute of Photography and San Francisco State University, a move that led to internships and his first job with the Associated Press in Central America. One of his first big assignments for AP was covering the plight of Cuban refugees in Panama. He then spent 4 1/2 years with the Boston Globe where he covered the civil wars in Bosnia and Congo. For The Post, he has covered a variety of national and local stories, including the growing Hispanic community. He is also working on a long-term project on the blending of cultures in the mestizos of Peru.
